So Microlab, not a name that makes you instantly think of a speaker manufacturer is it Don’t worry we didn’t think so either, and we would have to admit that they were not even on our radar for asking for review samples either.
That was until we heard them at Gadget Show Live We had stopped by a stand to say hi to some ‘industry friends’ and they 7C’s were on display but also at that moment hammering out some tunes too. So much is the trend to add increasingly more speakers or crazy software to imitate having a room full of speakers that it has started to ruin what speakers should really be about. Good clear, quality unmessed with music. Any music aficionado knows there is only one real way to enjoy it and that’s in Stereo, start adding any effects and surround to it and you just ruin it.
Enough of the stories but that’s why we like the 7C’s, its back to basics, 2 simple units one with the amplifier built in, 110w RMS total and both units have 2 massive 6. 5″ drivers for the mid and bass tones and a 1″ cone tweeter to take care of the highs. You may think without a dedicated sub they would seem underpowered but you couldn’t be more wrong. The bass is immense, like so crazy we even dialed the bass DOWN when testing them watching films because they were shaking the whole room!
Having 2 speakers that take care of everything keeps everything simple, makes cabling easy and also making them look right in your room easy too. The one thing we can get used to is quite how much these things pummel you with audio, the size of the drivers really does make a HUGE difference. Compared to the SP2500’s we are used to there just seems to be so much more sound be thrown at you even if the volume levels are the same. Something we have noticed is that you really don’t want to be too close to these speakers, you either need to be sat back from them or have the set up away from you. So if you have them set up beside your TV you wont be sat right on top of them so it should be fine, but for PC use having them at the edge of your monitor really wont work. You’d need to get them moved a good 8′ to 10′ away preferably at the edge of your room. So to recap, for anyone with a HTPC set up in their front room or someone that see’s music and films as the main use for their PC these speakers are perfect for you.
Couple them up with a decent sound card and you are on to a winner. We would like to thank Microlab for the speakers on test here today, you can discuss your thoughts in the OC3D forums. These seem like good speakers but I love my surround sound too much and I would never go back to using a two speaker set up. Surround sound adds even more depth, especially for gaming where the sound is dynamic, anyone who has had a decent surround sound set up would never say you aren’t missing out with two speakers.
